BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE
The Arlington Middle School Life Skills Program is a systematic approach to school-wide discipline which seeks to develop 15 characteristics for a well rounded middle school student and future citizen. The life skills are integrity, initiative, flexibility, perseverance, organization, sense of humor, effort, common sense, problem solving, responsibility, patience, friendship, curiosity, cooperation and caring. If a problem arises, the student will be asked to fill out a form addressing which life skill could be used to alleviate the problem. The conduct grade will then be based on the number of life skill conduct slips filled out per student per nine weeks. We believe this discipline program to be more positively based and one that helps encourage students to correct their own behavior.

Please note Arlington Middle School enforces a policy of NO TOLERANCE toward fighting, bullying, stealing, showing disrespect or insubordination, or exhibiting a defiant attitude toward faculty and staff. These behaviors will result in an automatic out of school suspension. ACS Policy #6.300

LIFE SKILLS
Integrity- to be honest, sincere, and of sound moral principle
Initiative- to do something because it needs to be done
Flexibility- willing to change plans or course of action when necessary
Perseverance- to keep working until the job is done
Organization- to plan, arrange, and implement in an orderly way
Sense of Humor- to laugh and be playful without hurting others
Effort- to try your hardest
Common Sense- to use good judgment
Problem Solving- to seek solutions in everyday situations
Responsibility- the willingness to respond appropriately and be accountable for your actions
Patience- to wait calmly for someone or something
Friendship- knowing how to make and keep friends
Curiosity- a desire to learn and know about things
Cooperation- to work together toward a common goal
Caring- to feel concern for others

DETENTION

Detention is served on Fridays from 4:15-5:15 PM. If upon receiving the detention notice, the parent has a conflict with the time and date, they must contact the teacher immediately to discuss the possibility of rescheduling. If a student misses a detention and the assigning teacher has received the assigned form back from the parent acknowledging the date and time, the student will be assigned to ISS for one day. If a rescheduling date cannot be determined, then ISS will be assigned. ACS Policy #6.316

IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION
The In School Suspension room is located in the back of the cafeteria and is presided over by the ISS monitor. While in ISS, the students work on packets of work put together by each grade level, which address the low TCAP objective scores for that grade level, assigned classwork for that day, and Accelerated Reading. Any quizzes, tests, etc. require teacher and administrator approval to be administered in the ISS classroom. In the even the student is not able to take the quiz, test, etc., the student is responsible for arranging a make-up time with the teacher. ACS Policy #6.316

BULLYING
Arlington Middle does not tolerate Bullying. We believe everybody should enjoy our school equally, and feel safe, secure and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence, religion and nationality. ACS Policy #6.304

If a student does not feel safe or secure in their school environment, they are encouraged to speak with a teacher, school counselor, or administrator.

BUSES
A bus is an extension of the classroom, and students must conduct themselves on the bus in a manner consistent with established standards for classroom behavior. The rules of conduct have been developed to provide a safe and pleasant environment for students while being transported. A student who violates bus rules which impact the safety of others may have their transportation privileges suspended by the principal. ACS Policy #6.308

1. Observe the same conduct as in the classroom. Fighting, bullying, harassment, and any other behaviors creating an unsafe environment will not be tolerated.

2. Students may only ride the bus which serves their home address and may only board or get off the bus at their assigned stop.

3. Student should be at their assigned bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick up time.

4. Students transported in a school bus shall be under the authority of, and be responsible directly to the driver of the bus.. Students will board, depart and cross the roadway as per instructions from the bus driver.

5. Students must remain in their assigned seat, aisle must be clear. Keep head, hands, and feet inside the bus.

6. Parents and unauthorized persons are not allowed on the school bus.

7. Bus driver is authorized to assign seats and make changes at their discretion. AMS procedures are for female students to sit on one side of the bus and male students to sit on the other side of the bus. Female and male students are not to sit in the same seat at any time on the school bus.

8. Video surveillance shall be used to promote the order, safety, and security of students, staff, and property.

9. Be courteous, use no profane language.

10. Keep the bus clean, do not eat or drink on the bus. The use of aerosol sprays, perfumes, etc. is prohibited.

11. Students will not throw any item in or out of the bus. This behavior can lead to serious safety consequences.
Parents/students will be charged for repair to damage of the interior/exterior of the school bus; minimum charge is $65.

12. Backpack size is limited to one the student can pick up and hold in their lap.

13. Large band instruments are not allowed on the bus (see below).

14. Students will not tamper with equipment or vandalize the bus. Parents/students will be charged for repairs.

15. Students may not use electronic devices including cell phones, cameras, iPods/MP3 players, radio/CD/DVD players, etc. on the school bus. Cell phones and electronic devices may not be used for phone calls, texting or taking pictures at any time while on the bus. See ACS Policy #6.308 for more details.

16. Smoking and the use of any tobacco products on a bus are prohibited.

In order to provide for the safe transportation of all students, large band instruments should not be placed on the school bus. Large instruments (ex: tuba, baritone horn, baritone sax, marching snare, cello, string bass, guitars, keyboards) can interfere with the driver's vision, block aisle and emergency exits, and injure student passengers.

The following instruments WILL BE allowed on school bus daily runs: Flute, Piccolo, Trumpet, Coronet, Clarinet, Oboe, English Horn, Bass Clarinet, Alto Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Violin, Viola

The following instruments WILL NOT BE allowed on school bus daily runs: Trombone, French Horn, Bassoon, Guitar, Tuba, Snare Drums, Cello, Baritone Sax, String Bass, Bass Clarinet

CAFETERIA PROCEDURES
1. Walk orderly into the cafeteria.

2. Move quietly through the serving lines.

3. Keep voices at a low volume at all times.

4. Use good table manners at all times.

5. Remain at the table, which you are assigned. Visiting from table to table will not be permitted. Students not complying with the cafeteria procedures will be assigned ISS lunch. Students who have been assigned to ISS lunch and continue to violate cafeteria policies will be assigned ISS insubordination.

6. Get up only when given permission. Take all trash with you when you are dismissed. No food is permitted out of the cafeteria.

7. Cooperate with all cafeteria personnel.

8. Absolutely no food is to be thrown. Students throwing food will be assigned ISS.

9. No horseplay is allowed, and students are expected to keep their hands to themselves.

10. All students must have permission from an administrator to exit the cafeteria.

Any time a students is not following cafeteria procedures, they will be assigned ISS/ISS lunch.

Parents/guardians are welcome to join their child for lunch at the parent/student table. However, additional students (friends) are not allowed to eat lunch with an adult who is not their guardian. The only exception to this rule is made for grandparents. Also, parents can only bring lunch/food for their child and not for other children. Due to limited seating we are asking all visiting parents remain in the office until their child's lunch time.

PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Students may not be in possession of any type of personal communication device or personal electronic device, including but not limited to cell phones, tablets, and laptops, that is turned on or in visible/audible use at any time during the regular school day on school property. Students may not use electronic devices including cell phones, cameras, iPods/MP3 players, radio/CD/DVD players, etc. on the school bus. Cell phones and electronic devices may not be used for phone calls, texting or taking pictures at any time while on the bus. Students who choose to carry a personal communication device with them to and from school must keep the device turned off and stored in the student's assigned locker during the school hours and on school property. While on the bus, cell phones must be off and stored in a backpack or purse.

The first time a student violates this policy he/she will be warned and the phone taken to be picked up by the parent the following day between the hours of 8:00AM-8:30AM and 3:00PM-3:30PM in the school office. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE PICK UP TIMES. The second time a student violates this policy the device will be confiscated and a parent conference is required to retrieve the device. The third offense the device will be confiscated and the student assigned ISS for insubordination the phone taken to be picked up by the parent the following day between the hours of 8:00AM-8:30AM and 3:00PM-3:30PM in the school office. ACS Policy #6.312

Severe Electronic Device Offenses (ACS Policy #6.312):
Highly inappropriate activities include, but are not limited to:

Electronic communication that contains inappropriate content, profanity, intimidation, or threats to others;
Cheating or other forms of academic dishonesty;
Taking or showing inappropriate photographs/video;
Communication that causes a disruption to the learning environment; and/or
Refusal to relinquish the device to persons of authority upon request.

Violations considered to be severe may result in suspension from school for up to 10 days,regardless of the number of previous offenses.

CHEATING
Cheating is defined as follows:
1. Plagiarism

2. Giving or attempting to give test information, which includes AR tests.

3. Receiving or attempting to receive test information, which includes AR tests.

4. Giving or attempting to give work to others

5. Receiving or attempting to receive work from others

6. Taking credit for another's ideas

7. Taking credit for another's work

AMS operates on an Academic Honor System. Cheating is intolerable; all students are expected to do their own work and tests. All students caught cheating will receive a zero on the assignments in question and will be assigned either ISS or OSS for insubordination as each student is required to sign a "no cheating" agreement during enrollment procedures.

Public Displays of Affection
are not allowed. Students will receive ISS.
