Arlington Middle School teacher Jonathan Hawkins is moving from the classroom to the role of assistant principal beginning this upcoming school year. He assumes the position from Tabetha Banks, who was recently named principal at AMS.

“Mr. Hawkins’ experiences and familiarity with the community sets him apart,” Banks said in her announcement to the school faculty. “He brings many strengths to the AMS administrative team having held many school, district, state and national leadership positions.”

Hawkins began teaching at AMS in August 2012. As a 7th grade teacher, he taught several subjects including English Language Arts, history and computer literacy. Hawkins hasn’t shied away from leadership roles in the school. He’s been the grade-level chair for social studies and coding, an instructional technology coach, and a member of the leadership team at AMS. He’s also served on the ACS Superintendent’s Leadership Team and the textbook adoption committee.

Hawkins passion for public school education has also shined on the state and national levels having been a TN Ready Learning Leader and a course facilitator for the National Teachers Association.

“I’ve had some very strong leaders in my career at Arlington Middle and ACS who have encouraged and given me opportunities along the way,” Hawkins said. “I hope to continue that legacy and pay it forward to other teachers in the school and invest in our students. It’s in our district’s name that we are a community, and my goal will be to help foster that idea.”
